Mama Muhammad Yousuf Laghari: A Beacon of Justice and Human Rights in Sindh
Originating from a small village in Mirpurkhas, Mama Muhammad Yousuf Laghari is a towering figure in the legal and human rights landscape of Sindh. With an LLB from Sindh University in 1967, he quickly rose to prominence as a student leader, spearheading pivotal protests that shaped Sindh’s nationalist movement.
Throughout the Zia-ul-Haq era, Laghari was the sole defender of political activists in landmark cases, becoming a symbol of resistance against repression. His relentless pursuit of justice extended into the 1990s when he founded the Sindh Democrats Group, uniting activists across the region to champion democratic values.
Throughout his career, Mama Yousuf Laghari has remained an influential figure in both the legal and activist communities in Sindh. He is celebrated not only for his legal acumen but also for his unwavering dedication to justice, human rights, and the betterment of society. His legacy continues to inspire many in Sindh and beyond.
A distinguished academic, he served as Dean of the Law Faculty at Sindh University and established a law college in Mirpurkhas, fostering the next generation of legal minds. Beyond the courtroom, his incisive columns earned him widespread recognition, including the Best Columnist award from the Pakistan Newspapers Society.
As a founding member of Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission and former Advocate General of Sindh, Mama Yousuf Laghari’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to justice, human rights, and the empowerment of the oppressed.
